Ok, so yesterday I watched the Lifetime Movie Network movie Killer Hair, based off of a book by Ellen Byerrum. I have to say, it was much better than I expected from a Lifetime Movie. There was no heart-break, child-kidnapping or heart-wrench for the protagonist (a witty character named Lacey Smithsonian); just good old fashioned murder solving. I was glad to see Washington D.C. in there- that poor city doesn't get nearly enough recognition in movies, and when it does it is only from a greenscreen. But I'm rambling. The movie gives you just enough background information to understand where Lacey is coming from, but doesn't dwell on it long enough for you to forget what the point of the movie is. Being a Lifetime movie, there is a (hot) man from her past whom she wants to ignore and some good (and occassionally entertaining) best friends who are trying to get them together.
The movie starts at a funeral, where you are introduced to a good amount of the characters, and then gets going decently quickly from there. There is enough action to keep you interested through the whole movie; enough wit to keep you entertained; and enough fashion tips to make you feel like you are sitting at a Kohl's counter.
The writers did manage to merge fashion and murder well enough, and did manage to make me laugh once or twice. I also gained a new appreciation for vintage clothing. I thought that the acting was good, although I must confess that if a movie has a good enough storyline I focus more on that than the acting. Speaking of the storyline, I thought it was good- not too many murders, and only one was expected. The movie also managed to surprise me with one of its murder victims- I have to say that I was not expecting the third and final victim.
I did manage to guess (correctly) the killer from an early point in the movie, after you are first introduced to the character. Even so, the movie kept me guessing and on my toes, managing to make an avid CSI New York and Miami, Without a Trace, Criminal Minds and NCIS watcher second-guess herself. If you are not as into crime shows as I am, you will probably have a harder time guessing the perp.
There was not a lot of blood and gore, which I appreciated, and I thought that it was a good watch. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars for good acting, a decent mystery, a good storyline and decent characters.
If you want to watch this movie you can find it on the Lifetime Movie Network, http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/lmn/killer-hair/video (this is where I watched the movie), or http://mymovees.com/archives/watch-killer-hair/ (the novamov link worked on my computer).
Watch the movie, think about it, and leave a comment to let me know what you thought of it and whether or not I did a good job reviewing it. Thanks for reading!
